❤️ What is Perfusion Technology?

Perfusion Technology is the highly specialized medical discipline focused on operating and managing cardiopulmonary bypass equipment (heart-lung machines) that temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during cardiac surgery, allowing surgeons to operate on a still, bloodless heart.

Role of a Cardiac Perfusionist:

Clinical Perfusionists are responsible for:

✅ Operating the Heart-Lung Machine during cardiac surgeries
✅ Maintaining extracorporeal circulation (blood circulation outside the body)
✅ Regulating oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the blood
✅ Controlling body temperature (hypothermia/normothermia)
✅ Monitoring blood gases and electrolytes during surgery
✅ Managing anticoagulation to prevent blood clotting
✅ Operating ventricular assist devices (VADs) and ECMO systems
✅ Ensuring patient safety during life-critical moments
✅ Making split-second decisions that impact surgical outcomes

Critical Nature: Perfusionists literally hold patients' lives in their hands, making them one of the most trusted and highly-valued members of the cardiac surgical team.
